David Cleveland, a patent attorney with decades of experience as patent counsel for corporations and in private practice, has joined Patterson Thuente IP’s growing team of intellectual property lawyers.

Cleveland co-founded IPLM Group, an IP boutique that operated from 2002 to 2016. He is a well-respected member of the IP community with 37 years of IP experience, including 20 years in-house at 3M where he held positions of Senior IP Counsel for Europe, based in Brussels, and Assistant Chief IP Counsel. In private practice, David has represented many of Minnesota’s largest companies. His international experience includes registration since 1996 as a solicitor for England and Wales, and frequent involvement in opposition proceedings, overseas litigation, international licensing, and parent-subsidiary agreements.

Serving as Of Counsel for Patterson Thuente IP, Cleveland will focus his efforts on assisting companies with patent drafting and prosecution; IP portfolio management; licensing; freedom to operate, invalidity and patentability opinions; and global IP protection strategies.

“One of the things I love about IP practice is that you never stop learning, said Cleveland. “I had many reasons to join Patterson Thuente IP, including the opportunity to become a better attorney by taking advantage of their recognized expertise in handling IPRs and other post-issuance proceedings.”

“David has extremely valuable experience and his practice complements ours in terms of the clients and industries he serves, his international expertise, and his commitment to providing value-added client service,” said Tom Dickson, managing partner of Patterson Thuente IP. “He adds great strength to our expanding team.”
