Casey Kniser is a key member of the firm’s litigation department. He is a trial lawyer who handles cases involving all aspects of patent, trademark, and copyright law. Casey has significant experience handling complex litigation involving multiple parties, particularly in IP litigation hot spots such as the Eastern District of Texas.

Professional Experience

A former JAG officer in the U.S. Navy, Casey started his legal career as trial defense counsel and a prosecutor in courts-martial. He worked closely with NCIS agents on criminal investigations, and also acted as legal advisor to commanding officers of fighter-jet squadrons stationed a Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach. While serving on active duty, he was appointed as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia. After completing his Naval service, Casey was an associate at a Minnesota law firm where he practiced airplane litigation along with handling patent, trademark and copyright cases.

  • Twice successfully defended Russian software company in multi-defendant infringement lawsuit in East Texas; the plaintiff dropped the case a few weeks before trial without settlement and received nothing
  • Enforced patent for implantable medical device resulting in favorable settlement
  • Defended maker of floor scrubber against infringement claims and obtained summary judgment of no infringement
  • Enforced beverage company’s trademark rights against winery and obtained settlement including product-label disclaimers
  • Defended copyright infringement case discussed in Nimmer on Copyright as the leading case on enforcement of copyrights by the U.S. government
